The Myth that Wills are sacred
Explaining the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975
One recurring myth about law is that your will is sacred and will always be honoured. I’m very sorry to say it out loud, but it’s not true 😔. It’s a lot like the myth that ship captains can marry people - which is also not true, although it does make for some lovely Star Trek episodes.
But the fact it is a myth came up today because I was, as I sometimes am, summoned to respond to this tweet:
And I thought that I should explain what’s going on - now that is not to defend the law as it is, if you want it changed, use politics to change it, but it will hopefully, inform you.
