I heard this discussion this morning. Mike Graham start the morning of on the right note most of the time! Thank you, Steven, for explaining the actual legal position. Why on earth is this government doing this? It appears that our 'esteemed' Foreign Secretary loves to wring his hands over slavery which , quite honestly, there is nothing we can do about it now apart from never repeat it but Lammy is happy to give away the Chagosians without their consent. Added to that, this is a strategic military base. Student politics before our eyes on the front bench.

The UK’s treatment of the Chagossians over the years has been shameful - and disgracefully carried on by and through the Privy Council. So I initially thought that handing the Islands to Mauritius might be doing the right thing. But if that truly is not what the Chagossians want, then it must not happen. And given that time’s running out, and the idea of handing a National Trust style endowment is both daft and unaffordable I suspect it cannot happen. And will the Government really try to do it via the Privy Council? It might be time for all those great-and-good Privy Counsellors to give the monarch some counsel for once.

It's why I flagged the twitter account Chagossian Voices - it strikes me as obvious that we must listen to their wishes, and quite shocking that Lammy both didn't listen but claimed he did

I ceased being shocked by Lammy some time ago. Appalled but no longer shocked.
